About Me

Hiya! I’m Nick Brosnahan. I have other names, but those are the important two.

I was made in Japan, grew up in Normal, Illinois, spent two years in Shanghai, China when I was ten, went to college in Hanover, New Hampshire, spent a year in Paris, France, and have now lived in Sunnyvale, California for 27 years. I consider myself a Californian now, but I’m definitely from “lots of different places”.

My work life has spanned several different companies in Silicon Valley since 1992, but mostly I just keep coming back to work at Apple as a software engineer. I’m in an off-work phase right now. Permanent? Who knows. I still do side-projects. Does that count?

My wife Anne, who has also recently entered into an off-work phase, is the best partner I could possibly have gotten together with. I cook her food and she does my taxes.

We have two grown children: Kellen and Kyra. They are unique and capable people. It’s too bad they’re leaving just as they’re getting interesting. Despite our grievous errors raising them, they both turned out okay. They are now in process or about to enter graduate school.

I’ve been into cycling for both exercise and transportation for years now. As a consequence, I’m now also compelled to be into cycling advocacy because the built environment is so freakin’ dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians in the US.

I also run (slowly), lift (light) weights, play guitar (poorly), learn foreign languages (with varying levels of capability), do photography (with some success), read a lot (mostly SF/F), and travel (both new places and favored repeats).

Our newest adventure starts soon. Anne and I are downsizing into an Edwardian flat in San Francisco this summer. We’re saying farewell to the suburban lifestyle and embracing the walkability and transitability of the city. There’s also the three flights of stairs to get home every time we leave the flat. My quads and glutes are going to be massive.

Cheers.
